Dr. Baumrucker is the senior member of the medical staff, having opened his medical practice in Highlands in 1971. After graduating from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, he attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. He completed his internship at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. 

He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice, the NC Medical Association, the National Board of Medical Examiners, and the NC Academy of Family Physicians,. He also serves as a student preceptor for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Until recently, he was in family practice. However, desiring to lengthen his time spent in medical mission work in Montero Bolivia, he closed his medical practice here in the fall of 2003. He returns to Highlands-Cashiers Hospital during the late spring, summer and fall to serve as the hospital's daytime ER physician, putting to use more than 30 years of experience in emergency room and urgent care medicine.
