Dr. Wheeler opened his medical practice in Cashiers in 1988, later forming the group practice Mountain Area Family Medicine with Dr. Mark Heffington. He is assisted in his medical practice by physicians assistant Richard Wayne, PA-C.

Upon graduating from Georgetown College, in Georgetown, KY, Dr. Wheeler received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville,TN. 

He completed his internship and residency in Family Medicine through the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) in Asheville where he was chief resident. He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Southern Medical Association. He also serves as a preceptor for the UNC School of Medicine.
